SHOPPING FAQ

Q. Where can I find California Baby products locally?
California Baby products are found at natural health food stores like Whole Foods Markets, select gourmet markets and specialty stores, beauty supplies, pharmacies and children's boutiques. You can also find a select mix of California Baby products on the baby aisle at Target stores and Babies R' Us nationwide. If your local store does not carry California Baby products, we suggest they contact us directly so that we can ensure a steady supply of your favorite California Baby products. Click here to go to our Store Locator page.
Q. Why can't I find your products in Canada anymore?
We hear ya! And are working diligently to make your favorite California Baby products available in Canadian stores. Unfortunately, a universal harmonized regulatory standard does not exist for natural personal care products; when it comes to natural and aromatherapy products, Health Canada's rules are very different from the U.S. It is important that we are able to communicate on our label what makes California Baby products special while conforming to the very restrictive regulations. We appreciate your passion and hope to have good news for you soon!

We ship to Canada via UPS Worldwide Expedited. Normal transit time is 3-5 days, however, it may be longer depending on the delivery location and customs delays. For an instant shipping quote, please place your order and select UPS Worldwide Expedited under 'Choose Shipping Method' during checkout. Please be aware that there may be additional fees associated with your shipment (custom fees, local taxes, etc.). Because of the high brokerage fees that may be assessed by US and Canadian postal services, we only ship via UPS.
Q. I'm not comfortable ordering online. Can I call in my order?
California Baby can only accept orders online. Shopping on our site is safe and secure. We use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption to keep your information safe, and we never distribute your personal information to third-party vendors.
Q. How can I receive a printed catalog?
As an eco-friendly company, we do not produce a formal catalog. Our website showcases our entire product line and is the best product information source. Ordering online is a safe, secure and the earth-friendly way to buy our products. Occasionally we will include new or seasonal product information sheets with your order. They are printed sustainably on FSC approved paper, which contains recycle content post consumer waste. Printed using soy inks. We do not mail out order forms or info sheets.
Q. I am new to California Baby products. How can I get free samples or product coupons?
Complimentary samples are included with orders (subject to availability).Interested in a particular product? Please note it in the comments

section during checkout; if available, it will be included with your order. Otherwise, samples of new items or products that compliment your purchase will be

sent. If you are not ordering at this time, try our mini-sampler - an inexpensive way to try

selected key product.

Although we do not have store coupons available, special offers are posted on our website,

Q. How do I track my order?
There are two ways to track your order:
1. After successfully placing your order on our website, you will receive an email order confirmation from customerservice@californiababy.com. A link to check order status may be found within the body of the email after the statement, "You can always find out the current status of your order by going to."
2. All packages sent via UPS will have a tracking number assigned and will be emailed to you upon shipment of your order. The tracking number comes from a second party--you will not see the California Baby email address. For UPS, the sender's address is Quantum View.

Important:
  • It takes up to 72 hours after you place your order for the tracking number to be available
  • Check your Junk Mail Box as many times these notifications go directly there
  • Use our Contact Us form to request tracking if you are unable to retrieve your tracking link; please be aware that we cannot process telephone tracking requests
Shipment tracking is not available for packages shipped via United States Postal Service (USPS). California Baby cannot guarantee delivery or replace any lost shipments when we ship via USPS. This is why we prefer to ship UPS; they are traceable and are insured.
Q. I see a posted price that looks wrong - how do I know if a product price is accurate?
Despite our best efforts, a small number of the items on our website may be mispriced. If an item's correct price is higher than our stated price, we will, at our discretion, either contact you for instructions before shipping or cancel your order and notify you of such cancellation.
Q. What methods of payment do you accept?

PRODUCT FAQs

Q. Where can I find more information about your products?
Our site has the most up to date and complete information on California Baby products. Jessica's blog, the mOMtras also offers seasonal suggestions and highlights products and ingredients.
Q. Is California Baby Diaper Cream safe for use with cloth diapers?
California Baby uses USP pharmaceutical grade lanolin, which is ultra-purified, instead of petroleum based or fish oil ingredients as a moisture barrier in our diaper rash cream. Because lanolin will melt when diapers are washed in the hot water cycle, our Calming Diaper Rash Cream should not leave a residue or affect the absorbency of cloth diapers. We suggest you patch test prior to use.
Q. What is the best way to store my California Baby products?
California Baby products are made in small batches with the finest, freshest natural ingredients.
Store creams and oils in a cool, dry dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. This especially important if you are 'stocking up' by buying multiple products. The bathroom is not the best place to store your products but the hall or bedroom closet is. When purchasing our gallons, we suggest you refill into a smaller bottle and keep it out of the shower unless it will be used completely within one month. If you are reusing your pump or bottle, we suggest you sanitize it with rubbing alcohol between uses. Here's how: pour a small amount into your bottle and shake, pump out or squeeze thru the dispensing cap. Leave it to dry completely (overnight is best) on paper towels. The alcohol will evaporate without a trace of residue.
Q. How do I determine the expiration date of a particular product?
"Best by" dates are printed on the bottom of our bottles and jars and stamped into the crimped seal ofour tubes. If a "best by" date is not available, to denote the age of your products, refer to the lot number on the bottom of the container. The first number represents the last digit of the year the product was made. Count forward three years, that's your expiration date. We recommend that they be replaced after 3 years. But follow the rule "If in doubt—throw it out!" This goes for all personal care products (and moms, this means make-up to).
Q. Where are California Baby products made?
California Baby products are proudly made in the USA.
Q. Are your products safe for pets?
Our products are made from natural ingredients that are safe for both humans and pets. Please note, however, that we have never tested our products on animals. Also, our products are not meant for consumption. So, if you have concerns about using a product on your pet or if you have a pet that has ingested a product, your veterinarian is your best resource
Q. The product I purchased is a little darker (or lighter) than my last bottle, is this normal?
Natural products can vary in scent, color and to some extent texture. As natural ingredients are crop based, there are many [natural] factors that can affect the look of a product based on the growing season, the time of year the ingredient was harvested/processed, etc. These variances are what make natural products unique. Products can darker over time as the herbs become more pronounced; herbs may fall to the bottom of the bottle (simply shake to mix). Essential oils are volatile (evaporate as they release their scent) and you may notice a slight change in the blend. This is normal. California Baby essential oil blends are complex and expected to be enjoyed in each stage of the "opening" of our high purity oils.
Q. Do you use organic ingredients? Are any of your products certified organic?
Our Facility:
The California Baby FDA registered manufacturing facility is also Certified USDA NOP Organic. Whereas many skincare companies function without any regulation and often say whatever they want about their products, California Baby follows strict set regulatory protocols (checked and certified by a 3rd party) so that you receive only the best and safest products. To operate a FDA registered facility (licensed to make drugs) is huge and the organic certification is the icing on the cake!

Our Products:
California Baby continues to lead the way in the purchasing and contracting with organic farmers in the USA. We work closely with them and purchase years in advance so that the farmer knows he has a home for his organic crop avoiding the fluctuations in market conditions. Jessica, California Baby founder & developer, also works closely with raw material suppliers to increase their organic content and pushes for innovation in Green Chemistry production process. However, sometimes, due to our strict allergen standard, organic might not be the best option. For example, we require that our vegetable oils be processed in a nut-free facility. If the only organic option for vegetable oil is one that comes from a facility that also processes nuts, we will chose the non-organic option—so that we are guaranteed allergen free material thus avoiding cross contamination. Our customers can always rest assured that we are continuously using and updating our formulas with organic material that also meets our strict allergen profile so that you receive the healthiest, most natural ingredients available.
Q. I am a Vegan. What products can I use?
All California Baby products start with a vegetarian point of view. We make two products that utilize animal ingredients: California Baby Diaper Rash

Cream contains an ultra-purified lanolin and our sunblock sticks contain beeswax. The choice was made to use lanolin and beeswax as water barriers instead of the typical (cheaper and cruder) petroleum and fish oil alternatives. Lanolin is extracted from the wool of the sheep and is not considered a body fat. Beeswax is hypoallergenic and is considered acceptable by many vegetarians.
Q. Do you test on animals?
California Baby does NOT conduct product or ingredient tests of any kind on animals. We test in vitro or on humans.
Q. Are your products safe for pregnant women to use?
California Baby Super Sensitive products (no fragrance) are an excellent choice for use during pregnancy. We recommend that any expectant mother check with her physician before changing her skin care routine with our products, or any other line of products.
Q. My child has eaten some of our California Baby products; what should I do?
Our products smell good and children may want to take a taste. Although safe and natural, if ingested, your pediatrician should always be your first point of contact. If you cannot contact your pediatrician, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Q. What quality standards are used for your tote bags?
Our tote bags meets the toy industry standards (EN71), CONEG and California Prop 65 for environmental standards.
Q. I am concerned that I may have had a reaction to one of your products. What do I do?
Contact your physician. In the case of life-threatening emergencies, call 911 or go the nearest emergency room. If you're not sure or just want to be safe, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Your physician or poison control should always be your first point of contact.
Q. What is the best way to remove sunscreen from the skin?
Because our sunscreens are water resistant, we recommend you wash with our bodywash & water, but the trick is to apply the wash first (without water) allowing the cleanser to break up the oils. For very resistant areas, try applying our lotion or massage oil to break up the sunscreen and then, cleanser and bathe as usual.
Q. How can I remove sunscreen stains?
Because the sunscreens are highly water resistant (80 minutes in water), we recommend that you use an oil based cleanser or a cleaning product w/o

water first to break up the emulsion. There is also a stain remover called “Kiss Off” which is available in art supply stores such as Pearl & Michaels that can be

helpful.

Packaging

Q. Are California Baby products and packaging BPA, PVC and phthalate free?
Yes, all California Baby products and packaging are free of BPA, PVC and phthalates. Phthalates in skin care products may be found in synthetic

fragrances - California Baby only uses pure aromatherapy quality essential oils to scent our products. Our bottles are made from HDPE (high density

polyethylene)—a material that is safe and PVC, BPA and phthalate free. HDPE is accepted by most recycling facilities across the country. All California Baby

bottles are resistant to high temperatures, cracking and won't leak chemicals into the product.
Q. Do you offer any of your products in larger sizes?
Many products are available in half and one gallon sizes, please click here for a direct link to our 'Bulk/Gallons'

page.
Q. What is the cleanest and safest way to sanitize my bottles before I refill my products?
The following steps are recommended to sanitize your container when refilling or reusing our bottles:
1. Remove all old product from the bottle using hot water.
2. Add approx. 1 teaspoon of rubbing alcohol to the empty bottle and swish around, coating the inside of the bottle, be sure to include the cap/pump/sprayer

too; Pour out.
3. Allow to air-dry completely by placing on a paper towel (upside down) overnight. The alcohol will evaporate completely without leaving a residue.
4. Refill with your favorite California Baby product!

INGREDIENTS FAQs

Q. Where can I find a complete list of ingredients?
An ingredients & packaging tab is included on each product page. Our 'What's New' page spotlights new products,

announces any ingredient updates and posts exciting happenings and notes from Jessica, founder & developer of California Baby. We also maintain and

update our ingredient listings on www.ewg.org as part of our commitment to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. California

Baby is compliant with the requirements for Full Member Status for the Compact for Safe Cosmetic signers which includes the following:
  • Comply with the EU Cosmetics Directive in all markets
  • Disclose all ingredients
  • Publish and regularly update product information in EWG's Skin Deep database
  • Comply with ingredient prohibitions and restrictions under the Compact for Safe Cosmetics
  • Participate in the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

Beeswax is hypoallergenic and is considered acceptable by many vegetarians.
Q. What type of emollient oils do you use?
We use only pure cold pressed vegan (vegetable) oils in our products.
Q. Why does California Baby use preservatives?
Cosmetics are subject to contamination and growth of bacteria, mold and other microorganisms and children regularly have cuts, scrapes and put all sorts of things in their mouths. So we created a broad-spectrum preservative system to help ensure the integrity of California Baby® products with formulas tailored to the needs of each product. We use higher than average concentrations of antioxidants & essential oils, which help to preserve our products. California Baby feels that preservatives are a very necessary part of a personal care product since they are expected to have a long shelf life—unlike bread or muffins. Our motto is 'skin care should be preserved, but not food.' Skin care is not food (although ours smell yummy!).In our creams, lotions and hair conditioners, we utilize caprylhydroxamic acid (amino acid) (and) glyceryl caprylate which are coconut derived amino acids and not strictly classified as preservatives but as antioxidants. In our shampoos & bodywashes and bubble baths, gluconolactone (corn) (and) sodium benzoate, an approved preservative for organic skin care are used. Many companies that claim to be preservative free utilize this type of system. We feel one should be very careful of companies that claim to be preservative free as it is either stretching the truth or, we feel, undesirable to use an unpreserved product.
Q. Are your products paraben free?
Yes, all California Baby are free of parabens.
Q. DEET Free. Why?
DEET is toxic when ingested and may cause skin irritation in sensitive persons. High concentrations applied to the skin can cause blistering. DEET's use has been implicated in seizures among children. California Baby prefers a natural approach to controlling pesky bugs with our Natural Bug Blend® that contains citronella, lemongrass and cedarwood, which are great natural alternatives to toxic chemical bug repellents such as DEET. Our traditionally recommended essential oils are safe, gentle and effective. Our blend works on insects without harming or killing them. It has a distinctive, but pleasant, odor which makes it difficult for pests to locate a host. Citronella is not harmful to humans, pets or the environment. Bug repellency is based on scent—reapply generously and often. For use on ages 6 mos. and up.Speak with your doctor about a complete bug repellent strategy. Note: Natural oils like citronella is carefully monitored by the EPA and in order for a bug repellent to be effective, a specific percentage of the active must be used. Products that use citronella simply for scent, like our Summer Lotion/citronella, are not bug repellents and should not be relied upon for bug protection.
Q. Do California Baby products contain coconut derived ingredients?
California Baby products contain coconut derived ingredients. Coconut, the seed of a drupaceous fruit, is not typically restricted in the diets of people with tree nut allergies. However, in October of 2006, the FDA began identifying coconut as a tree nut. Because cross-reactions are rare, many experts in the allergy field feel that coconut should not be classified as a tree nut. Discuss this with your doctor.
Q. I've heard negative things about sulfates; what are they?
In addition to being harsh invasive cleansing agents, sulfates or DEA can be contaminated with 1-4, Dioxane, an ingredient known to cause cancer. California Baby products do not contain Sulfates or DEA. Many companies may claim that their products do not contain any Sodium Lauryl Sulfate because they know many consumers do not want that harsh cleansing agent. Check out the other ingredients and you will see they are just as cheap and just as invasive, but they have a different name.
Q. What cleansing agents does California Baby use?
California Baby® pioneered the use of plant derived glucosides (decyl glucoside and lauryl glucoside) which are non-invasive cleansing/bubbling agents that we use exclusively in our bubble baths and shampoo & body washes. Soapbark and yucca are added for extra bubbling power. Our glucosides are very gentle and are non-stripping of delicate membranes, naturally no tears and sustainably grown; they undergo rapid and complete biodegradation in the environment.
Q. Does California Baby use Colors or Dyes or Numbing Agents?
California Baby does NOT add any colors, dyes or clear formula chemicals to our products; the color and texture can change slightly based on the time of year and the harvest conditions of the natural ingredients. California Baby uses extremely mild cleansing agents and does not need to add 'numbing chemicals' to make a product tear free.
Q. I have multiple sensitivities; are California Baby products free of common allergens?
California Baby products are free of common allergens such as milk/casein, egg, peanut, walnut, cashew, almond and pecans, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat. Certified organic colloidal oatmeal (contains gluten) is used in our Therapeutic Relief Eczema products but all other California Baby products are gluten free.
Q. I have food allergies and am following a restricted diet. What products are appropriate for my use?
California Baby products are free of common allergens such as milk/casein, egg, peanut, walnut, cashew, almond and pecans, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat. Certified organic colloidal oatmeal (contains gluten) is used in our Therapeutic Relief Eczema products but all other California Baby products are gluten free.
Q. Should coconut be avoided by someone with a tree nut allergy?

Q. I am allergic to corn. What products are appropriate for my use?
California Baby utilizes some ingredients derived from corn (and coconut) such as our creams and lotions, shampoo & bodywashes and bubble baths. Here are the California Baby products that are completely free of corn derived ingredients:

Fragrance

Q. What does California Baby use to scent their products?
California Baby® uses only pure essential oils to scent our products (unless they are Super Sensitive and No Fragrance); we test our essential oils for synthetic additives and pesticide residue—making them pure and true aromatherapy quality. Because of the quality of our oils you will notice that our blends actually work! Calming does indeed calm...
Q. What is "Natural" fragrance and what do you mean by No Fragrance?
Our Super Sensitive products do not contain any added scent or scent masking agents to make them smell like nothing. California Baby products do not contain clear formula chemicals (for many other products to be completely clear, chemicals must be added to cut through the natural cloudiness of the formula). Natural products will have their own natural scent—this is to be expected and tells you that no scent masking agents have been added. When a product smells like absolutely nothing, it is time to be suspicious!
Q. What are synthetic fragrances and why are they undesirable?
Synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum and can mimic many scents. Synthetic fragrances may contain phthalates along with many allergens and skin sensitizers. Synthetic fragrances may explain the ongoing headache or the mystery rash you suffer from but were never sure of the cause —suspect your air freshener, shampoo, perfume, dishwashing liquid, laundry detergent… Synthetic fragrances do not belong in natural or organic products – even though some "natural" standards do allow their use. You can spot a synthetic fragrance on the ingredient listing as 'fragrance' or 'parfum'; or you can simply use our most basic sense: smell and take a sniff. Also synthetic fragrances do not evaporate the way essential oils do - so when a scent just won't go away—it's a good chance that it is synthetic. Essential oils are expensive and it is highly unlikely that discount products contain even a drop of essential oil. Beware, many companies mix essential oils and synthetic oils and claim aromatherapy or natural.

SKIN CARE FAQs

Q. Which products should I use for dry/irritated skin?
Our customers report great success with the Super Sensitive Shampoo & Bodywash and our Calendula Cream. Because everyone's skin has different needs, we recommend you try our Try It Kit. Our customers report that one particular cream/lotion may tend to work better than another for them, or that they like to layer creams or like to switch between several of them; our Try It Kit was designed to make it easy and affordable to try all of our California Baby products recommended for dry, irritated skin. For more skin care tips, please visit our Letters & Feedback page to hear about others experiences
Q. How often can I reapply creams?
Because California Baby products are skin care products and not medications or over-the-counter treatments, they may be reapplied as often as you feel is needed.
Q. You recommend doing a patch test, how does it work?
We always recommend doing a patch test prior to using any product. Here's how: First, stop the use of other skin care products and use one type exclusively (one week is best) so that you can get an accurate result. Place a small amount on the inside of the wrist or inner thigh and look for a reaction. If you see any redness, stop using the product immediately. If no redness is observed, continue. Another thing to be aware of is not using too many different products (like wipes, powder, etc.) from different companies so that you can pinpoint where the reaction is coming from

Sensitivities

Q. I am allergic to corn. What products are appropriate for my use?
California Baby utilizes some ingredients derived from corn (and coconut) such as our creams and lotions, shampoo & bodywashes and bubble baths. Here are the California Baby products that are completely free of corn derived ingredients:
Q. Are your products hypoallergenic?
Our products contain safe and effective ingredients that have withstood the test of time including plant extracts, botanicals and essential oils. California Baby avoids ingredients that cause irritation or provoke allergic reactions—highest on the list is synthetic fragrances, which may contain phthalates and other irritants. To ensure purity, our essential oils are tested for synthetic contaminants and pesticide residue. We suggest that you always do a patch test before use. Here's how: apply a small amount of the product to the inside of the wrist right before bedtime. In the morning look at the area for any redness, itchiness or any sign of irritation. Do this for 7 days. If you are sensitive to a product it is likely to show up during this test.
Q. Are your products non-comedogenic?
This term refers to ingredients in beauty products that clog the pores and can cause blackheads, pimples or cosmetic-related acne. We do not use potentially comedogenic, non-natural ingredients like mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin and dyes that are commonly found in other personal care products.
Q. I am chemically sensitive. What are the pH values of your products and what products I can use?
California Baby products are recommended for all skin types, even very sensitive skin. As the pH values of our products are proprietary and confidential, we are unable to give out this information. We suggesyou purchase travel/sample sizes and do a patch test to check compatibility to your skin.

Sun Care

Q. What's the difference between UVA and UVB rays?
UVA rays are always present, no matter the weather or season and these rays are very powerful and are one of the main causes of premature aging, sun spots and leathery skin. UVA rays deeply penetrate the skin and can also penetrate clothing and glass. UVB rays are not are strong as UVA rays, but they are the main cause of sunburns and skin cancers and thus are just as damaging, if not more damaging, than UVA rays.
Q. Are California Baby SPF products non-chemical?
All of our suncare products are PABA free and we never use chemical sunscreens such as Oxybenzone, Octyl Methoxycinnamate, Octyl Salicylate, etc., which are UV absorbers that penetrate the skin and can break down under UV conditions undermining any SPF effectiveness. California Baby® sunscreens create a protective layer (like a band-aid) that blocks out the UVA/UVB rays. Our non-chemical sunscreens are non-invasive and do their job by sitting on top of the skin scattering and reflecting dangerous UV rays.
Q. How do California Baby sunscreens work?
California Baby® utilizes coated micronized titanium dioxide (TiO2 for short) as the active ingredient for our sunscreens. In its raw state, our TiO2 particles are first coated using a proprietary process and then suspended into a base that further encapsulates the particles, keeping the size uniform, even and stable. California Baby then adds this stable solution into a natural wax base, which further encapsulates, suspends and helps to make the product water resistant. This process ensures that our products provide high SPF broad-spectrum protection, without the telltale whiteness of regular non-chemical sunscreens. Our non-penetrating formula is topical (non-migrating) and sits on top of the outermost layer of the skin, the Stratum Corneum. This is the layer that is constantly being sloughed off by the body. Many sunscreens (chemical) need to be absorbed by the skin in order to be effective—ours does not.
Q. How should I apply on sunscreen?
